Welcome to the St. Louis Who We Are
The St. Louis Mineral & Gem Society is a nonprofit club, consisting mostly of
amateurs interested in rocks, minerals, fossils, gems, lapidary (stone
polishing) and earth sciences. The club was founded in 1951 to help promote our
hobby and knowledge of the earth. Monthly Meetings with Programs Our club meets once a month from September through May, usually on the first Friday of the Month. The September meeting is the first Friday after Labor Day. Each meeting includes a program related to the hobby, door prizes and refreshments. Once or twice a year we have an auction. Club meetings begin at 7:30 PM in Room 203 of the Earth & Planetary Science Building on the Hilltop Campus of Washington University in University City. From Forsyth Boulevard, turn north onto Hoyt Drive. Hoyt Drive runs parallel to Skinker Blvd, between Forsyth Blvd and Forest Park Parkway (Millbrook Blvd). Pebble Pups, Our Club for Kids Pebble Pups, the rock club for kids, gets together for some hands on activities during a portion of each regular club meeting.
Field Trips Field trips are scheduled during most of the months between September and June.
November Show We host an annual show in early November. For the past several years, the show has been held in the large ballroom at the Stratford Inn in Fenton, Missouri. We have exhibits by members, institutions and prominent collectors. Demonstrators teach about various facets of the hobby. Dealers from several states sell mineral specimens, fossils, lapidary and jewelry making supplies, finished jewelry, books about the hobby, hobby equipment, and other items. A popular feature of the show is our children’s booth. Kids 12 years old or under may select rock, mineral or fossil materials and assemble a collection in an egg carton. In two decades of shows, we have given out over 12,000 of these “Rock Collection Starter Kits”. June Picnic & Auction In June we have a picnic at one of the St. Louis area parks. The festivities include a rock auction, plenty of good food, bingo and the sharing of friendship. Other Activities of our club Volunteer Speakers for Schools Several members of the SLM&G Society volunteer to speak at schools about rocks, minerals or earth science. Educators should contact Glenn Williams at (314) 892-1991 to find out more Sponsors of Science Fair Awards Society members serve as judges for Earth Science related projects in the St. Louis Regional Science Fair. We provide prizes for the best three Earth Science projects.
Affiliates of the Greater St. Louis Association of Earth Science Clubs The club also participates in events sponsored by the Greater St. Louis Association of Earth Science Clubs. These activities include an annual show, a swap at the Missouri Mines State Park and joint field trips.
